Measured in carats (1ct = 0.2g). Bigger isn't always better — a smaller, well-cut stone often outshines a larger poorly-cut one.
Graded D (colourless) to Z (yellow tint). D-F are colourless, G-J near-colourless. Most eyes can't see differences past J in setting.
Refers to inclusions inside the stone. FL (flawless) to I3 (included). VS1-VS2 are usually clean to the naked eye and well-priced.
How well the stone is shaped — affects sparkle most. Excellent / Ideal cuts are the most brilliant. Cut matters more than the others for visual beauty.
