Lost gold chains are heartbreaking — and almost always preventable. Most chains don't fail suddenly; they give warning signs for weeks or months. Catch them early and a 15-minute in-store repair saves the piece. Miss them and you might be replacing it. Here are the five signs to watch for.

1. The Clasp Doesn't "Click"

Lobster clasps and spring-ring clasps both rely on a small spring mechanism. When that spring weakens, the clasp doesn't close with the firm "click" you remember. It might still close — but it'll open with much less force, and you might not notice until the chain is on the floor (or worse, lost). If your clasp feels limp, has trouble grabbing, or pops open during normal wear, replace it. Cost is small; loss is huge.

2. Visible Wear at the Bail or Pendant Loop

If you wear a pendant on your chain, the bail (loop where the pendant connects) is the highest-wear spot. Look at it under bright light: is it thinner than other parts of the chain? Are there visible scratches or grooves? If yes, the metal has been thinning over years of pendant friction. Bring it in before it snaps — we can reinforce or replace the bail.

3. The Chain Looks "Stretched" in Spots

Quality 22k gold chains have uniform link spacing along their length. If you notice some links look slightly elongated, oval-shaped, or just visually different from the others — that's stretching from repeated pulls. Stretched links are weaker. Repair before they break.

4. Visible Cracks or Gaps in Solder Joints

Every link in a chain is a soldered joint. With age, those joints can develop fine cracks or visible gaps. Run the chain slowly through your fingers in good light — feel for any rough spots, look for any links that don't sit flush. If you see or feel anything off, that's a weak point waiting to fail.

5. The Chain Has Tarnish in Some Spots But Not Others

Authentic 22k gold doesn't tarnish — but if your chain has a base metal core (which can happen with low-quality "22k" pieces from unscrupulous sellers, or pieces that have been damaged), you'll see uneven discoloration. If you see this on a piece you thought was real 22k, bring it in for a free appraisal. We'll tell you what you actually have, and what's worth repairing.

The 5-Minute Habit That Prevents Chain Loss

Once a month, in good light, run your hands slowly along every chain you own. Flip the clasp open and closed. Look at the bail. Run a fingertip along every link. If anything feels weak, doesn't click right, or just looks off — bring it in. A small repair now is much cheaper than a replacement later.
