Rings change size for all kinds of reasons — fingers swell over years, weight changes, climate adjustments, sometimes you just inherit a piece that doesn't fit. Whatever the reason, professional ring resizing at a qualified jeweller is straightforward and usually quick. Here's what actually happens, and what to expect at our Mississauga workshop.

How Resizing Actually Works

For sizing UP (making a ring bigger), the jeweller cuts the band, adds a small piece of matching 22k gold to extend it, then solders the joint. The new section is filed smooth and polished so the seam disappears. For sizing DOWN, a small piece of the band is removed and the cut ends are soldered back together. Either way, properly done, the seam is invisible and the ring's structural integrity is preserved.

What Affects Turnaround

Several factors determine how long resizing takes: the size change itself (small adjustments are quicker than large ones), whether the ring has intricate stone settings (kundan, polki, or filigree work needs careful handling so no stones loosen), and the current workshop schedule. Rather than promise a generic timeline, we give you a specific pickup date when you drop off — based on your ring and our queue.

What It Typically Costs

For 22k gold rings, resizing costs are based on (a) the labour involved and (b) any additional gold needed. Sizing up adds gold, which adds to the cost. Sizing down doesn't require new gold. Costs vary, but most simple resizing falls in a small fraction of the ring's total value. Sony Jewellers provides a free quote on the spot — no surprises.

When NOT to Resize

Some rings shouldn't be resized. Eternity rings (with stones all the way around) physically can't be without removing or repositioning stones. Tension-set rings rely on precise pressure and lose their setting if the band changes. Rings with very complex multi-piece settings can compromise structurally if resized aggressively. In these cases, alternatives include sizing beads (small gold beads added to the band's interior) or re-platinging — your jeweller will guide you to the right option.

Should You Size Up or Down?

If you can comfortably get the ring on but it spins or feels loose, you usually want to size DOWN by half or one full size. If you can't comfortably get the ring past your knuckle, you want to size UP. Try the ring at different times of day — fingers swell with heat and salt intake. If you live in a climate with hot summers and cold winters, choose a size that works for the average; consider sizing beads for the swing.
