People often think custom jewellery design means a long, expensive ordeal. At Sony Jewellers in Mississauga, the process is more straightforward than most people expect — and the cost premium over a comparable ready-made piece is usually 10–25%, not the multiples some imagine. Here's how a custom 22k gold piece actually comes to life.

Step 1: The Consultation

The first visit is the most important. Bring whatever inspires you — phone photos, screenshots, sketches, even a piece of fabric in a colour you love. Family heirlooms are also welcome, especially if you want to incorporate or repurpose old gold. Our jewellers will sit down with you, ask what you want the piece to feel like (not just look like), discuss gold weight options, and explore whether you want stones, plain gold, or a mix. Most consultations take 30–60 minutes. There's no charge and no obligation.

Step 2: Design & Quote

After the consultation, our team prepares a sketch and detailed quote. The sketch shows what the finished piece will look like; the quote breaks down gold weight (the largest cost component), making/labour, and any stones. The quote is firm — what we say it costs is what it costs. You review it without pressure. If you want changes, we revise. When you're happy and ready to commit, you approve and pay a deposit (typically 50%).

Step 3: Hand-Fabrication

This is where our jewellers go to work. Timeline depends on the design — its complexity, stone choices, and current workshop schedule. We confirm an exact timeline at consultation and stick to it. Throughout the process, we'll send updates if there are decision points, and you're welcome to visit and see the piece in progress. Everything is hand-fabricated in our Mississauga workshop — no outsourcing, no shipping out, no third-party labour.

Step 4: The Final Reveal

When the piece is ready, you come in for the reveal. We invite you to try it on, see it in our showroom lighting, and check the fit and finish. If anything needs adjustment — a slight resize, more polishing, a tweak to the closure — we make those changes on the spot or within a day or two. Final balance is paid only when you're 100% happy. The piece goes home with you in a custom box, with a written purchase certificate.

What You Should Know Before You Start

Two things to keep in mind. First: timing matters. If your custom piece is for a specific event (wedding, anniversary, milestone), come to consultation at least double the typical timeline before — for bridal, that means 3–4 months ahead. Second: trust your jewellers. The best custom pieces happen when you bring inspiration but stay open to suggestions from the people who hand-craft them every day.
